Rug Care

Keeping your rug looking great is easy! And we’ve made this guide to make it even easier.

Padding

A rug pad will add years to the life of your rug by protecting it from dirt, wear and slippage, especially in high traffic areas. It will:

  • Hold the rug in place so that you don’t crash to the floor when it slips under you.

  • Reduce the wear and tear of the rug by not allowing it to slip.

  • Keep dirt and grit away from the foundation of the rug.

  • Prevent mold and mildew.

  • Keep your rug and floor from discolouring each other.

Rotation

You need to rotate your rug at least once a year. This is because each part of the rug will experience different amounts of sunlight and foot traffic. Regularly rotating your rug will help even out these sources of wear.

Crushed Pile

So your rug has been sitting underneath a piece of furniture, for what seems like, forever. So how do you get your pile to sit upright again? You’ll need a soft brush and a small amount of water. Moisten the affected area and then gently brush the pile and repeat until it’s restored.

Storage

To both store your rug and keep it fresh you’ll need to wrap it in fabric. Doing this will let the rug breathe. A rug can rot or mildew if it is stored in a damp or humid area or if it is stored in plastic.

Vacuuming

Rugs should be vacuumed regularly to remove dirt and grit. But be sure to only use the regular nozzle as using other nozzles can damage the rug. It is also very important to be careful when vacuuming around the fringes of your rug as they can easily get caught and ruined in the vacuum machine.

Beating

Beating is the best and traditional way to clean a rug. To do this, simply hang your rug outside and just beat it.

Stain Removal

So you’ve spilt something on your rug. Don’t worry! There are many ways to prevent and deal with stains. First thing you should do is scoop up as much as possible of the stain with a blunt knife or spoon. Immediately after, dilute the spill with water. However, be careful not to soak the stained area, as this could accidentally spread the stain. With a cloth, slowly work from the outside of the stain to the inside and continue until the stain is gone.
